ROTATION GUIDE FOR
VELVET DIRVE MARINE TRNASMISSIONS

   This page provides specific information pertaining to input and output rotation relating to various models
   of Velvet Drive / Borg-Warner Marine Transmissions.

   A. Definition of hands of rotation:
   
       1. Left Hand (LH) rotation = engine crankshaft turning clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.
           Also known as automobile rotation and standard rotation.
       2. Right Hand (RH)  rotation = engine crankshaft turning counterclockwise as viewed from the front
           of the engine.  Also known as boat or marine rotation and counter rotation.

   B. Model specific rotation:
 
       All of the listed transmissions, except those in Section C. below, may have either LH or RH input
       rotation, dependent only on the correct indexing of the pump.  This has no effect on the reversal
       or non reversal of rotation built into the reduction gearing.  Reversal or non reversal of rotation
       between input and output is due to the internal layout of the gear reduction section and it is not
       changeable without changing the reverse pinion carrier and/or all the reduction gearing.

       1. Models 71C, 72C, 1017 & 1018:
           a. Ratios  1:1, 1.52:1, 2.10:1, 2.57:1 & 2.91:1 input rotation may be either LH or RH, the output
               rotation will always be the same as the input rotation in forward.
           b. Ratios  1.91:1 & 1.88:1 input rotation may be either LH or RH, the output rotation will always
               be opposite the input rotation in forward. 

          2. Models 1004 & 1005 V-Drive:
           a. Model numbers ending -002 (1.99:1), -005 (2.49:1), -011 (1.51:1) & -012 (1.21:1) input rotation 
               may be either LH or RH, the output rotation is the same as the input rotation in forward.
           b. Model numbers ending -003 (1.98:1), -004 (2.50:1), -010 (1.53:1) & -013 (1.21:1) input rotation
               may be either LH or RH, the output rotation is opposite the input rotation in forward.

       3. Models 73C & 1006
           All ratios - input rotation may be either LH or RH, the output rotation is the same as the input
           rotation in forward.

The followings applies to all the above models.  Incorrect pump indexing will result in non operation of the
transmission.  The arrow at the top of the pump body MUST match the rotation of the engine as seen from the
FRONT of the engine.  If it does not then remove the 4 bolts and rotate the pump body 180 degrees until the
arrow matches the engine rotation.  If there are any letters beside the arrows disregard them. 
It's the arrow that must match. 
 
      4. Models 1013 & 1014 (CR2 Series):
           a. Model numbers ending -001 (1.58:1), -003 (2.03:1), -005 (2.47:1), -007 (2.93:1) LH input only,
               output is the same as the input in forward.
           b. Model numbers ending -002 (1.58:1), -004 (2.03:1), -006 (2.47:1), -008 (2.93:1) LH input only,
               output is opposite the input in forward.
           c. Model numbers ending -009 (1.58:1), -010 (2.03:1), -011 (2.47:1), -012 (2.93:1) RH input only, 
               output is the same as the input in forward.

   Operating any of the above transmissions in reverse to obtain forward boat motion will severely
   damage the transmission.  The reverse gear is not made to handle higher than idle RPM.  The shift
   lever on the transmission MUST be toward engine when boat is moving forward.
 
   C. Models 1026 (Series 7000), 2001 & 2002 (Series 5000) and 3001 & 3002 (Liberty Series):
       All ratios operate only with LH input rotation.  Output for forward boat motion may be either LH or
       RH rotation. 
       1. Model 1026 - turning the shift lever shaft clockwise causes output to be opposite the input, turning
        shift lever shaft counter-clockwise causes output to be the same as the input.  
       2. 5000 & Liberty Series - shift lever toward the engine causes output to be opposite the input, shift
          lever away from the engine causes output to be the same as the input.
