for Marine Transmissions
A. Fluid Coolers:
All marine transmissions, except for a few small manual transmission application's, require fluid coolers.
The selection of the proper cooler is critical to prolonging the life of your transmission by keeping it cool.
Coolers come in many styles and sizes. The two most common are the straight through, below left, and
"U" shape coolers normally used on Crusader engines, below right. The "U" type has two sections, one
for transmission cooling and the other for engine oil cooling. "U" types come with a 45 and a 90 degree
stub. Tube bundle length is 9 inches.
Standard low pressure straight through coolers come in diameters from 2" to 3" and bundle lengths of
6", 9" and 12". Both push-on hose fittings from 3/4" up to 2-1/2" and NPT screw in from 1/2" up to 2".
The oil connection is 3/8" NPTF on 2" diameter bundles and 1/2" NTPF on 3" bundle coolers.
High pressure coolers are available in 2" diameter up to 5" diameter and lengths from 9" to 15".

B. Damper Plates:
Damper plates, also called flex plates and coupling plates, are mounted on the engine flywheel and
couple the engine rotation to the marine transmission input shaft. They do not act as clutch plates as
they turn the input shaft as long as the engine is running.
Styles available include spring loaded center, rubber dampened center and rubber bushing center.
Information required to order a new damper plate:
Part number off of old plate if available, or engine make and HP and transmission model.

C. Propeller Shaft Coupling Flange:
Information required to order:
Prop shaft diameter, solid striaght, split straight or taper bore type and transmission model number*.
*Some Velvet Drive / Borg-Warner models could be equipped with 4" or 5" flanges, specify diameter.

D. Other items:
Protect your investment by adding a heat alarm switch to your transmission. Screws in place of an
existing plug, no drilling. Simple to wire into existing engine alarm circuit or add a seperate circuit.
